Why does my PC crash when loading games on Steam?

My games crash about 10 mins into playing. Sometimes it causes a forced restart. Sounds like to simple of a question to ask here but I have literally done everything to fix issue with no luck.

I have 11th gen Intel core i7-11700f cpu, Radeon RX 7800 xt, 32GB ram. Windows 11. I have done the following to fix this with no avail.

  • Updated drivers.
  • Cleaned drivers with Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU). Update again.
  • Tried older drivers.
  • Uninstall games/reinstall.
  • Verified game files.
  • Launch games in admin mode.
  • Swapped RAM sticks.
  • Swapped GPU.
  • Clear shader cache.
  • Uninstall/reinstall Steam.
  • Uninstall/reinstall Windows.

And probably something I don’t remember doing as well. Update: I’m getting metadata staging failed errors and amdxc64.dll errors.

Research suggestions:

  • Win key+X, Event Viewer, expand Custom Views, select Administrative Events
  • Are you checking temperatures?
    • Win+X, click Terminal (Admin), type winget add --id CPUID.HWMonitor -e
  • Click Start, begin typing Reliability, open the Reliability Monitor and look for correlated events and causes.
  • Right-click on This PC and click Properties, click Advanced system settings, under Startup and Recovery click Settings..., choose Automatic Memory Dump and un-check Overwrite any existing file.
    • Use Nirsoft crash dump viewer and see if the faulting memory location is consistent, or the faulting driver/application show you the cause.
  • Steam launcher logs?
  • All games from Steam? Try something from Epic and does that crash too?
  • If you open the game to the main menu screen and wait before actual play - is it stable or crashes?

If system hangs or goes mono-color but hasn't gone to Blue Screen of Death, you may try using the Reset Windows Video Graphics Display Driver hotkey. Win + Ctrl + Shift + B
